Metro Volunteers Help Greater Minnesota Client Obtain Expungement

A client contacted Duluth-based Volunteer Attorney Program (VAP) because they were unable to secure housing due to a four-year old

misdemeanor offense on their criminal record. The client lived in the VAP service area but the case was venued in the metro. The client

was disabled and had been denied public and market rate housing due to the misdemeanor offense. Pro bono attorneys from the Minnesota

State Bar Association represented the client in a criminal expungement hearing to seal the record from public viewing. After the hearing,

the judge found that the client had proven that they were eligible for a criminal expungement. According to one of the attorneys, “We are

glad that the client can finally secure housing after several years of struggling. It was also great to collaborate with an organization in greater

Minnesota to meet the client’s needs.”
