Paralegal Helps Truck Driver Obtain Insurance to Save His Eyesight

A client came to the legal aid office because he was losing his vision in both eyes, and as a result had lost his job as an over-the-road truck driver.  Trucking was all he knew; he did not have a high school degree and did not know what he was going to do without a job and not being able to see.  Having lost his job, he did not have health insurance.

Sara Reed, paralegal at Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, met with him and helped. Afterward, the client left this message, “Hi Sara, my name is William Smith.  I came in first on January 26 and you helped me get hooked up with Medicaid.  I just want you to know that I just had eye surgery in one eye, and I can see.  So I was just calling to say thank you.  If it wasn’t for you, this wouldn’t have got done.  Thank you very much.”

The client is going to have surgery on the second eye, and if that is successful, his employer has told him he can have his job back.
